Why First Response Matters

Every Minute Matters in Cardiac Arrest

Cardiac arrest is one of the most time-critical medical emergencies. When the heart suddenly stops, every minute without effective resuscitation matters.

Globally, out-of-hospital cardiac arrest continues to have a very high mortality; the American Heart Association reports that approximately 9 out of 10 people who suffer an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest die. Immediate CPR and early defibrillation are among the most important interventions that can improve the chances of survival.

Evidence consistently demonstrates the importance of early CPR. A recent analysis of nearly 200,000 witnessed out-of-hospital cardiac arrests found that bystander CPR initiated within the first two minutes was associated with significantly better survival and neurological outcomes compared with no bystander CPR.

THE NEED IN INDIA

Strengthening Early Response

1.3%

Reported bystander CPR rate in one North Indian study of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest cases.

The need is particularly important in India, where available studies have reported low rates of bystander CPR.

A North Indian study reported bystander CPR in only 1.3% of cases, with 8.8% survival to hospital discharge among the studied out-of-hospital cardiac arrest patients.

Another Indian study reported bystander CPR in 9.8% of 205 patients. These findings highlight the need to strengthen CPR awareness, early response and resuscitation training among healthcare professionals and the community.
